Free Online Tool Will Aid HPC Managers in Maximizing Productivity of Investments
SAN DIEGO — September 18, 2008 — Tabor Research Inc., (www.TaborResearch.com) a research group focused on providing market research and advisory services for High Productivity Computing (HPC) communities, has announced the launch of the industry’s first HPC Productivity Analyzer - a new, free online tool to help HPC managers (such as HPC lab directors or IT general managers) evaluate and improve the overall productivity of their supercomputing investments. The HPC Productivity Analyzer offers HPC organizations the ability to evaluate how well their system and organizational infrastructure contributes to overall productivity and/or time to solution. Driven by peer comparison data and sophisticated productivity metrics, the Productivity Analyzer gives specific recommendations for the HPC investments that can most benefit each particular HPC installation based on specific, custom variables. The Tabor Research HPC Productivity Analyzer can be accessed online for free at http://www.HPCproductivity.com.
“Over the past several years, there has been increasing interest across the HPC industry to look at a broader set of productivity metrics in evaluating HPC technology acquisitions or personnel investments,” said Addison Snell, Vice President and General Manager of Tabor Research. “However, ‘productivity’ remained a soft concept that defied quantification and comparison – until now. In the past year, Tabor Research has built a sophisticated methodology for measuring, quantifying, and comparing productive HPC usage using data we’ve collected from HPC users in industry, government, and academia. The end result is a valuable resource that provides HPC managers with peer comparisons and actionable recommendations for maximizing the productivity of their systems (while also providing them the means to streamline their installations to prevent waste).”
”To Microsoft, high performance computing is about streamling workflow, reducing idle time, and accelerating R&D,” said Kyril Faenov, general manager, HPC division at Microsoft. “The Tabor Research HPC Productivity Analyzer gives us a construct towards these aims by placing real values on productivity. In our efforts to help HPC managers reduce complexity while increasing productivity, we intend to take full advantage of the “big picture” perspective that this tool provides in order to aid our customers in achieving the most productive HPC installation for their specific needs.”
The release of the Tabor Research HPC Productivity Analyzer is consistent with Tabor Communications observance of an industry-wide trend toward productivity transcending performance as the model for how systems and technology are applied to create a solution. Using the Tabor Research Productivity Analyzer, HPC managers can now examine their installations from a perspective that considers the entire ecosystem that creates their solution, encompassing everything from the development environment, to systems and storage, to the use and interoperability of applications, to the total user requirements – all combined to address the performance of the HPC system.
